The Belarusian opposition is confused. Action of disobedience today, but big rally on Sunday
To sudden today's inauguration Even state television was not ready for President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko. There was no broadcast from the ceremony, although this, as stunned oppositionists claim, is provided for by law.
Moreover, the first news broadcast after the ceremony did not include footage of the inaugural speech. It is quoted only in writing.
Lukashenko said that he is proud of Belarusians,
“who have passed the test of strength with honor—first of all, of their convictions.”
“We didn’t just choose the president of the country - we defended our values, our peaceful life, sovereignty and independence... I cannot, I have no right to abandon the Belarusians, who have linked not only political preferences to the state course, but also their destiny, the future of their children, everyone who, during such a difficult period for Belarus, remained faithful to the country and people,” Lukashenko said.
He believes that Belarus became the only country in the world that was able to resist the technology of “color revolutions.”
“Our statehood was presented with an unprecedented challenge - a challenge from repeatedly proven, fail-safe technologies for the destruction of independent states. But we were among the very few - even, perhaps, the only ones - where the “color revolution” did not take place,” the president noted.
Only a small group of protesters were able to quickly respond to the event.
Several people were detained near the Independence Palace, where the inauguration took place. Another small group protested with old posters (no new ones were painted) along one of the streets.
The Coordination Council of the Belarusian Opposition stated that it demands new elections and advocates an indefinite act of disobedience.
“Where are the jubilant citizens? Where is the diplomatic corps? To be honest, this is more like a gathering of thieves for the coronation of another thief in law. It is obvious that Alexander Lukashenko is the president solely of the riot police and a handful of lying officials... The devilish thirst for power and paranoid fear forced him to break the Law once again. As of today, he is no longer the President of the Republic of Belarus. He is simply the head of the riot police, who operate without insignia on the streets of Belarus and a handful of bureaucrats,” one of the members of the coordination council, Pavel Latushko, who is in Poland, wrote on social networks.
The Polish network of telegram channels coordinating the Belarusian protests called on subscribers to block roads and go to the central squares of their cities at 18.00 today. However, the puppeteers still feel confused, since according to established tradition they scheduled the “real people’s inauguration” for the weekend.
Posts also appeared designed to reassure discouraged oppositionists.
“The main thing to understand is that the secret “inauguration” of a person who lost the elections and is unable to regain control of the country is only a symbolic gesture and nothing more. Certainly not the end of the struggle,” wrote opposition political analyst Pyotr Kuznetsov.
