The Belarusian opposition demands that Lukashenko recognize Crimea as Russian

The Belarusian public movement “Civil Harmony,” which criticizes the current leadership of the country in the person of President Alexander Lukashenko from pro-Russian positions, called on official Minsk to recognize the reunification of Crimea with Russia.

This is stated in a statement by co-chairman Artyom Agafonov, reports the press service of the movement.

“In February 2014, political adventurers, relying on militants who seized weapons depots in western Ukraine, violating both Ukrainian laws and the agreements reached the day before, carried out an armed anti-constitutional coup in Kiev, overthrowing the legally elected leadership of the country. This was the end of the Ukraine we knew and loved. Chaos and lawlessness reigned in the country, illegal armed groups of nationalists were establishing their own order, not caring about the law, the leadership in Kyiv was illegitimate and did not rely on the will of the people,” the Belarusian politician believes.

“Under these conditions, the people of Crimea made their choice by holding a referendum on secession from Ukraine and joining Russia. In the absence of legitimate authority in Ukraine and the danger of numerous human casualties, this step was justified. The correctness of the choice was confirmed by subsequent events. At a time when people were being burned alive in Odessa, and a full-scale war was launched against Donbass, there was peace in Crimea,” Agafonov states.

In his opinion, recognition of Russian Crimea will not affect relations with Ukraine, since the ruling regime in Kyiv is already hostile to Belarus.

“They threaten us with sabotage groups and even make territorial claims. We need to be aware that Belarusian-Ukrainian relations will not get any better under the current regime. Over the course of four years, Ukraine, consumed by nationalistic and militaristic hysteria, managed to quarrel with all its neighbors, proving once again that a regime built on hatred and chauvinism cannot have friends. At the same time, Russia continues to remain the closest strategic ally of the Belarusian state,” says the politician.

In the current conditions, the co-chairman of “Civil Harmony” called on the Belarusian leadership to unequivocally recognize the Crimean peninsula as the territory of the Russian Federation.

Note that earlier The chairman of the parliamentary Republican Party of Labor and Justice, Vasily Zadnepryany, announced the recognition of Crimea by Russia.
