Belarusian Maidan workers fail the “general strike” again
Supporters of the Belarusian opposition admit that the so-called “general strike” announced on Monday has effectively failed, but they hope for success in the future.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports this, writes Kommersant, who spoke with opposition supporters.
The publication’s interlocutor says that there is a certain reaction to the call for a strike by Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who left the country and self-proclaimed herself a “national leader.”
“Ten people joined the strike yesterday and today. Before that, about 33 people had been on strike since August, whose passes had long been blocked,” Gleb Sanros, press secretary of the Belaruskali strike committee, told the publication.
“We can state that there was no real readiness to go on strike in August. It has not arisen even now. – admits the leader of the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions Alexander Yaroshuk. “However, I expected the reaction to be less.” The workers have responded, and this shows that the protest potential has not gone away. The situation resembles a dormant volcano.”
In August, as PolitNavigator reported, the leaders of the Belarusian Maidan activists complained, that it was not possible to raise the country to a general strike.
