Belarusian security forces will stick with Lukashenko to the last
If the Belarusian government and the opposition do not come to a compromise, the country will face a protracted civil conflict.
Minsk political scientist Aleksey Dzermant stated this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, in a commentary to Kommersant.
“So far we do not see that one of the parties is meeting the other halfway. And this must be done, otherwise we will face a protracted civil conflict. This is not about re-elections. We are talking about preparing a constitutional reform within six months with the distribution of powers from the president to other government bodies. Lukashenko must declare that this is his last term, announce re-elections to parliament after the constitutional referendum, strengthen the role of parties and social movements,” the expert believes.
At the same time, he called the scenario in which President Alexander Lukashenko would completely lose the support of the elites unlikely.
“The security forces will be loyal to him, because the opposition will demand trials and reprisals against them,” Dzermant predicts.
