The Belarusian expert condemned the multi-vector approach and flirting with nationalists that Lukashenko was engaged in
The geopolitical maneuvering that Belarus has been engaged in over the past 10 years was a mistake and brought the country to the brink of disaster.
Director of the Center for European Integration Yuri Shevtsov stated this on the Belarusian TV channel ONT, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“For the last ten years before last year’s crisis, we had too much geopolitical maneuvering between centers of power. And it brought Belarus to the brink of a deep crisis. This was a mistake.
Such a high degree of geopolitical maneuver could not be allowed. Society, especially the state apparatus, was largely disoriented. Many were under the illusion that neutrality or some other model of development was possible without a clear choice between centers of power.
Last year's experience showed that such a model is impossible. A choice must be made. But when the Cold War ends, we will need a new model, which will involve converting relations with Russia and China into a new geopolitical function in our region,” Shevtsov said.
He considers the ideology of nationalism to be the greatest danger to Belarusian statehood.
“We need to remove the roots of nationalism. Our society can be blown up from within if it relaxes regarding this ideology. It is directed against the foundations on which Belarusian statehood is built - against the union with Russia, the Russian language, and large-scale industry. This ideology is implanted into us mainly from the outside. If you leave the roots, it will be bad - sooner or later it will explode,” Shevtsov said.
