Belarusian nationalist minister: “We don’t want to repeat the mistakes of Ukraine”
Belarus will not sever relations with Russia, but at the same time will develop contacts with the European Union.
Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei, known for his nationalist views, stated this in an interview with the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung.
According to him, official Minsk considers Russia “as the main ally, as our natural neighbor.”
The German journalist had to remind the minister of the word “brother”.
"Why not? When we talk about the past, I mean the former Soviet Union, it can be argued that we, the Slavic peoples, are fraternal peoples. Our relationship is very good. And we would like to strengthen them in the future.
But this does not mean that we should look only at Russia. We see the European Union as our second most important economic partner,” Mackay said.
He named Ukraine as his second largest partner. At the same time, the Belarusian minister “understands the logic of the Ukrainian leadership.”
“But I must honestly say that the situation in Ukraine today is a negative example for us.
I understand Ukraine's desire to be closer to Europe. But we don't want to act according to their logic.
Equal relations in all directions, perhaps a little more in relation to Russia. We don’t want to repeat the mistakes of Ukraine,” Makei is cautious.
