Belarusian riot police provoked a rise in hatred
The unreasonably cruel actions of the Belarusian riot police during the dispersal of rioters, when bystanders and journalists were also detained and beaten, will provoke an increase in hatred towards the regime.
Russian political scientist Semyon Uralov writes about this on his blog, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports. The expert notes that all recent campaigns in Belarus have been accompanied by street protests, but the peculiarity of the current one was precisely the unmotivated cruelty of the security forces.
“Every election in Belarus takes place under conditions of protests. The exception was 2015, when everyone was shocked by the Ukrainian crisis. Therefore, it is worth asking the question: what is wrong in the political system if every election is like this or on the Maidan Square?
I think the answer lies in the question of political violence. Now we see that the key complaint against political power is unmotivated violence and cruelty against protesters.
Every traumatized ordinary person is three to five haters of the regime from among their relatives and friends. 5000 detainees means 20-25 thousand wanting revenge. Over the past 26 years, a generation of fathers and sons has grown up, who by inheritance cultivate hatred within themselves.
The second aspect is the partisan aspect of the protest. A partisan in a city is an underground fighter. Who is an underground worker? This is a person who is a civilian during the day and in public, and a combat unit in the evening,” says Uralov.
At the same time, he emphasizes that Russia is not interested in Belarus sliding into chaos. “Russia is interested in a capable state in Belarus. Because the Belarusian order is a matter of life support for the Kaliningrad region. Within the republic, be it a carcass or a scarecrow, a capable state is needed,” explains the expert.
