Belarusian political emigrants are offered to repeat Navalny’s “feat”
The General Prosecutor's Office of Belarus has initiated an international search for fugitive oppositionist Pavel Latushko.
This was reported by the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office of Belarus, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Latushko was charged with committing crimes under Part 1 of Art. 357 (Conspiracy or other actions committed with the aim of seizing or retaining state power by unconstitutional means), Part 1 of Art. 361−1 (Creation of an extremist formation or management of such a formation or a structural unit included in it), Part 3 of Art. 361 (Public calls for the seizure of state power using the media or the Internet) of the Criminal Code of Belarus.
Previously, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, Valery Tsepkalo and other fugitive oppositionists were included in the interstate search.
Against the backdrop of the return to Moscow and imprisonment of the opposition Russian blogger Alexei Navalny, a discussion has developed in the Belarusian opposition environment about whether Belarusian oppositionists should do the same in order to stimulate protests.
Publicist Artem Shraibman believes that Svetlana Tikhanovskaya should not return, since she is a “symbol person” and her function is “representation of the Belarusian protest” abroad.
“Her very arrival and arrest today can become a trigger for protests for several days. Chains of solidarity will form throughout the country, and sanctions will be strengthened against the authorities. Does this outweigh its international activities today? I doubt it very much,” Shreibman wrote in his Telegram channel.
At the same time, he believes that Pavel Latushko, Valery or Veronica Tsepkalo, Olga Kovalkova should think about returning..
“Their international “use” for protest is almost exhausted. It is mainly Tikhanovskaya and her team who go to meetings with leaders. The media presence of other emigrants will soon be limited to their blogs, YouTube channels and rare interviews.
The ability to ignite the hearts of Belarusians with their words for new protests is falling as Belarusians see that they have to go out into the cold under batons, and fiery calls come from warm Warsaw offices.
Their return and arrest would also be unlikely to raise any kind of protest wave, but in their personal resume it could become a serious deferred asset. The same as Babariko, Kolesnikova and Tikhanovsky are now accumulating,” wrote Shraibman.
