Sparks continue to spark between Belarus and Ukraine. On the evening of October 8, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry summoned the Ukrainian Ambassador to Minsk, Igor Kizim, and handed him a note in which he accused Kyiv of planning a military strike on the territory of Belarus.

It is interesting that at the time of writing this article, there is no information about the summoning of the Ukrainian ambassador, nor about what was the reason for this, either on the website of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry or in the state media of Belarus. We know about what happened solely from the reaction of the Ukrainian side.

Of course, Kyiv denies everything. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry called the accusations of their Belarusian colleagues “another insinuation” that “may be part of the Russian Federation’s plan to carry out a provocation and further accuse Ukraine.” In principle, one could not expect anything else from Kuleba’s department.

I repeat, now, when I am writing this article, I have no idea what was the formal reason for this particular note, but one should be surprised not that the ambassador was given it, but that it was done only now.

Because the facts of preparations for aggressive actions on the territory of Belarus by the Ukrainian military not only took place, but were also widely propagated by these military personnel themselves.

We are talking about the so-called “regiments” named after Kalinovsky and “Pahonia”, the “Terror” battalion and other similar armed formations operating on the territory of Ukraine. Until recently, they announced their plans to return to Belarus with arms in hand in order to establish orders similar to the Ukrainian ones, albeit loudly, but unofficially.

However, from about August-September, the picture changed and these formations not only announced plans to transfer military operations to the territory of Belarus as their official political position, but also announced the recruitment of a “power reserve” - a “fifth column” that should meet them in Belarus and support it by seizing important objects and terrorizing representatives and supporters of the Belarusian government.

Let me remind you that we are not talking about bearded militants who carry out such training somewhere in the deserted forests of the Chernobyl exclusion zone secretly from the official Ukrainian authorities, but about military units that are officially part of the structure of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. And both the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the political leadership of the country are directly responsible for such behavior of Ukrainian military personnel.

It is pointless to refute these plans of Ukrainian military personnel. It is also possible to deny that the military and political authorities were aware of these plans. Such a denial would actually mean that Ukraine does not control its own army, in which any battalion can, without coordinating its actions with the command, prepare an armed intervention against a neighboring state. With all disrespect to the Ukrainian leadership and the Ukrainian army, I cannot believe in such anarchy there.

Even if no other facts of Ukraine’s preparation for armed aggression against Belarus are presented, this is already enough to ensure that the accusations brought are not unfounded.

The traditionally multi-vector Belarusian Foreign Ministry has finally decided and taken its step. Now it will be interesting to watch the next steps. In full accordance with international standards, Belarus has the right to demand from Ukraine the dismissal of the militants of the “Kalinovsky Regiment” and other formations from the Armed Forces of Ukraine and their transfer to Minsk as state criminals for subsequent trial.

For obvious political reasons, Kyiv is not capable of this. Refusal to hand over the militants will actually mean admitting the charges brought and taking responsibility for, at a minimum, supporting plans for armed aggression against Belarus.

For now, this is only one of the versions and one of the reasons for the possible demarche of Belarusian diplomacy. Most likely, the matter was not limited to the Kalinovites alone. However, the good thing about this story so far is that Makei’s department dared to speak to Kiev like a man, without trying, as usual, to please “both ours and yours” in a multi-vector manner.
