Belarusian TV renamed Ukraine
State television channels in Belarus began to use new geotitles (an inscription in the corner of the screen indicating the location of the action) to indicate Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine.
It is these countries that President Alexander Lukashenko accuses of inciting mass protests by the Belarusian opposition.
Now these countries are designated in the news as follows: “former Polish People's Republic”, “former Soviet Republic of Lithuania”, “former Ukrainian SSR”.
This innovation found support both in Russia and Ukraine.
“Belarusian TV is fiercely trolling buffer puppets. The best design, I think,” wrote TV journalist Maxim Ravreba, who left Kyiv, on his Facebook page.
“The Belarusian channel called Ukraine the former Ukrainian SSR, Ukrainian truths of all stripes mournfully purse their lips. Well, just like in the joke, Petrovich, are you offended?” commented Maxim Buzhansky, a deputy from the ruling Servant of the People party.
“Well, why are they like that? It should be written “former illegally seized territory of the Russian Empire.” Let them freak out. And, if it goes like this, then write the names of cities at the beginning of the twentieth century - in Vilna, in Dvinsk, in Kovno, and Rezhitsa, etc. How will it sound, huh?
“In the former administrative center of the North-Western region of the Russian Empire, the city of Vilna, the separatist leader met with ....” Or: “In the former center of the Privisle region of the Russian Empire, the city of Warsaw, ... happened,” Russian political scientist Bogdan Bespalko wrote in his Telegram channel.
