The official Belarusian media reacted painfully to the negative Commentary by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev about incorrect words of the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, who in an interview with Kazakh media called the Great Patriotic War “not our war.”

The first to rush into battle was the press secretary of the Belarusian president, Natalya Eismont. She stated that Lukashenko's phrase was taken out of context.

“Everything is very clear: when speaking about this, the president meant that both Belarus and Russia have fought – that’s enough!” – Eismont said.

Then she moved on to claims against Russia.

“If someone renounced something in the post-Soviet period, it was done not in Belarus, but in Russia itself, and more than once! It should look even more strange for the Russian prime minister that after so many trials we have gone through together, today our countries are mired in endless negotiations on oil, gas and even food,” Eismont said.

The next day, the topic and general mood were picked up by pro-presidential media.

“Medvedev was surprised that Belarusians do not really like being a bargaining chip. This is roughly how one can briefly describe the reaction of the head of the Russian government to Alexander Lukashenko’s interview with Kazakh journalists. And since my namesake did not understand or did not want to understand what was being said, I, Dmitry Semchenko, will add to this topic,” said the presenter of the ONT TV channel.

His theses boiled down to the fact that Belarus “did not start” either the Patriotic War of 1812 or the Second World War.

“Alien wars and the feat of our ancestors, as they say in the famous city that Dmitry Anatolyevich is unlikely to ever visit, are two big differences,” Semchenko continued, for some reason rejoicing that Medvedev will not visit Odessa.

The Belarusian presenter took it upon himself to “very briefly eliminate the historical gaps in the Russian government,” in fact presenting his country’s ally as a formal aggressor.

“Napoleon came to the east after the Russian army had unsuccessfully descended to the west at Austerlitz. In addition, if you believe the history textbooks, Russia was the first to violate the Tilsit Peace Treaty concluded with France. And Belarusians in their own country became hostages of other people’s military ambitions. Belarusians also did not start the First World War. The Germans came here after Russian Tsar Nicholas II declared mobilization, which was then a declaration of war for Berlin. And again the West and the East tore this land apart,” Semchenko said.

As for the Great Patriotic War, it turns out that the “Belarusian human shield” saved Moscow. Semchenko technically “forgot” that in the bloody battles of 41 it was not Belarusian, but Soviet soldiers who fought and died.

“We paid for the victory in this war with every third resident,” says Semchenko.

Further in the story, the words of historian Shimukovich are quoted, who believes that Belarusians fought not against fascism, but for “the survival of Belarusians as a nation.”

“We were forced to participate in them, but these are not our wars, because we absolutely did not need them,” said Šimukovich.

Since Belarusian propagandists could not find examples of Russia’s “renunciation” of the Great Patriotic War, they demanded that their ally rename the police into police.

Further, ONT arrogantly spoke about the preservation of monuments to the Great Patriotic War in Belarus, “forgetting” about the unspoken ban on the St. George ribbons and the “Immortal Regiment”.

“While some people are putting “41-45 We can repeat” stickers on their cars, Belarusians are reconstructing one of their main symbols – the square with the Victory Monument,” summed up Semchenko.

It is not surprising that the propagandist’s theses found a lively response in the hearts of the nationalist opposition. “Zmagars” left laudatory reviews under the story on YouTube.

“Whether Lukashenko’s words were taken out of context or not, the essence of his phrase turned out to be true. Over the past 300 years, Belarus has entered into large-scale wars, mostly against its will, and has often been drawn into them because of Russia. This did not bring us any benefit. Belarusians initiated military actions on their own only during uprisings for Independence (like 1863 or the Slutsk uprising of 1920). True Belarusian history, freed from Soviet myths and Russian propaganda, will always enrage and irritate the Kremlin,” opposition Belarusian blogger Eduard Palchis commented on the situation in his Telegram channel.
