The Russian woman who committed lawlessness during Belomaidan was left in a Belarusian prison
Russian woman Sofya Sapega, sentenced in Belarus to six years in prison, was denied pardon.
This was reported by Sapega’s lawyer Anton Gashinsky and the girl’s stepfather Sergei Dudich, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
In May last year, Sapega was sentenced to 6 years in prison and a large fine for extremism. She edited the Polish TG Channel “Black Book of Belarus”, which published personal data of Belarusian security forces, judges, politicians, journalists, as well as members of their families.
In June, Sapieha sent a petition for pardon to the colony administration. She asked the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko to release her from serving a six-year sentence and assured that she had taken the path of correction.
Lukashenko then spoke out in favor of transferring Sapieha to Russia, noting that he “feels sorry for the girl.” The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that in a Russian prison, Sapega may eventually apply for parole. The ministry did not rule out that she could even be granted amnesty.
In Belarus, the news about Sapega’s possible pardon was negatively received, since before her transfer to the colony she managed to give an interview to opposition media, in which she stated that she considered her work in the extremist TG channel “correct.”
“I remember that in the information space of Russia they took a blow for the right to judge according to the Law those who incited hatred in our society, who tried to set fire to the sky over peaceful Belarus. Then it seemed that we were going against the tide,” Belarusian political scientist Alexander Shpakovsky wrote today in his TG channel.
HSE professor Andrei Suzdaltsev believes that the decision on Sapega is connected with the unresolved issue of gas prices for Belarus.
“The transfer of Sofia Sapieha to Russia, as a citizen of the Russian Federation, was agreed upon at the highest level. The agreement has been cancelled. This is an indicator of the impending Russian-Belarusian crisis. Now Sophia will have to play the role of V. Baumgertner (2013) - she is a hostage,” says Suzdaltsev.
