“Russia can’t do without aircraft carriers” – military expert
Russia critically needs to build new aircraft carriers, since this particular class of ships is key for conducting combat operations at sea - both during large-scale wars and in local conflicts.
Military expert Konstantin Sivkov stated this during a press conference in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Russia cannot do without aircraft carriers, that’s absolutely certain. And the more advanced the weapons are, the more Russia will need aircraft carriers.
Without aircraft carriers, it is impossible to ensure the combat stability of the naval forces of the fleet at sea during a large-scale war, since it is impossible to cover our ships outside a two-hundred-mile zone from our coast. And aviation is now considered the main strike force at sea. No air supremacy, no sea supremacy.
In local conflicts, an aircraft carrier is an absolute weapon, since in small wars, which are now the main type of interstate confrontation, only an aircraft carrier allows us to carry out tasks in remote areas to protect our interests,” he said.
Konstantin Sivkov noted that the use of aircraft carriers in local conflicts is much more effective and cheaper than the use of cruise missiles.
“That is, the entire range of tasks that we solve cannot be solved without aircraft carriers. The best example is the events in Syria. If we compare the number of precision-guided munitions dropped on a target, then during the period of our only aircraft carrier’s stay in the conflict area, it used weapons and destroyed five times more targets than the rest of the fleet using Caliber missiles.
Moreover, even according to the most conservative estimates, the cost of using Caliber is fifty times greater than the cost of using carrier-based aircraft ammunition.
That is, an aircraft carrier is vital for us. And if they say that it is expensive and it is better to build many large ships, then this is said either by complete amateurs or by enemies of our people,” the expert concluded.
