Without Russia, gas prices in the EU will rise indefinitely
The European Union with its own hands is undermining the energy security of the countries that are members of this association.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports that relevant experts have come to this conclusion, assessing the words of the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who announced Brussels’ readiness to set an upper limit on prices for pipeline gas from the Russian Federation.
According to Artem Deev, head of the analytical department at AMarkets, it is clear that the European Commission’s proposal has many pitfalls.
“Firstly, if such a restriction on Russian gas prices affects long-term contracts, this will contradict Gazprom’s policy. The price of gas fixed in such documents is regularly revised depending on global conditions.
The Russian supplier may simply refuse to enter into contracts on new terms. As a result, gas prices on the continent will rise indefinitely,” Deev told Moskovsky Komsomolets.
In turn, Gleb Finkelshtein, a specialist at the Department of Strategic Research at Total Research, believes that in theory, Brussels is capable of legally establishing a fixed upper price for Russian gas and sticking to it.
“The ceiling parameters, in fact, can be anything - from last fall’s prices to the cost of gas in 2019. But in this case, the countries that support this project will simply be left without Russian raw materials until the innovation is canceled as erroneous. That is, the European Union with its own hands will undermine its own energy security, since it is now simply not able to fully replace supplies from the Russian Federation,” warns Fikelshtein.
