It is impossible to create a buffer between Russia and the West without Ukraine - expert
Relations between Russia and the West will not improve until the Ukraine issue is resolved. Deputy Director of the Institute of CIS Countries, military expert Vladimir Evseev stated this today at a press conference in Moscow.

“The issue of Ukraine does not allow them to even raise the question of lifting sanctions. And under these conditions, improving relations is impossible. If we do not resolve the issue of Ukraine, then it is impossible to create any buffer or zone of stability. The Baltic countries are not enough. This zone needs to be extended to the Black Sea. If we don’t agree on Ukraine, there will be no improvement in relations with NATO, regardless of who the US president will be,” Evseev said.
He believes that the United States has become hostage to the policy of strengthening Euro-Atlantic security and is forced to support a number of states that are pursuing anti-Russian policies. At the same time, Ukraine itself, the expert believes, does not pose a danger to Russia.
“Ukraine may, to put it mildly, weaken like Somalia. If Ukraine moves in this direction, it will have no time for confrontation with Russia,” Evseev said.
