Unemployment often pushes Ukrainians towards committing crimes. One of the most common criminal schemes is telephone fraud. The organizers of this type of “business” can be people located in places not so remote. They, using their sources of information, report misfortune to family, friends, and friends and ask for money. The victim, being in a state of shock from the news received, very often gives the money voluntarily. The weak point in this scheme is the moment of money transfer, which can be tracked.

In July of this year, a native of the Cherkasy region lost his job in Kyiv, having been laid off. In trouble, he was helped by a casual acquaintance who looked like a drug addict, who carefully asked the man about his hardships and sympathized with him. Then he said that there was a job related to fraud that he was offered, and which he did not want to do.

The unemployed man easily agreed, and, having received instructions by phone, went to Dnepropetrovsk, where they rented an apartment for him. Following the instructions, he went to one grandfather, to whom he told that he had come from his friend, who had hit a girl in an accident, and he needed money. Having taken ten thousand hryvnia, he handed it over to the scammers. His “earnings” amounted to five hundred hryvnia.

Telephone scammers have mastered their craft so masterfully that the victim of the crime was sure that he was talking to his friend on the phone. After he called a friend and found out that he had not committed any accident, the police managed to detain the “walker” in hot pursuit. However, neither the police nor the valiant SBU officers, who so “effectively” intercepted the telephone conversations of the “separatists,” were able to get on the trail of the organizers of the crime.

The court sentenced the unlucky seeker of easy money to two years in prison with probation.

In addition, a recent court in a similar case in the city of Rubezhnoye, Lugansk region, sentenced two local residents to prison for three years on six counts, but even here the organizer of the criminal scheme, who negotiated with the victims, was not detained.
