The madness in Donbass must be stopped

KtHDbBXnTUAYuri Kovalchuk, a journalist from Kherson, who came to Kramatorsk to cover the events of the revolution in Donbass

The war in eastern Ukraine became an unprecedented case of genocide of one’s own people in the modern history of Europe. Ukrainian battalions, under the guise of pompous talk about democracy and the unity of the country, openly bomb megacities, and small settlements are simply wiped off the face of the earth. And all this is carelessly covered up by the fig leaf of official propaganda, according to which the rebels, in order to discredit the Ukrainian military, shoot themselves from howitzers and aircraft.

Now almost all the weapons that Ukraine can counter the militia are being used. This land, this people will never be Ukrainian again - even if Ukraine were victorious. But Kyiv, apparently, does not count on the conquest of the “hearts and minds” of the residents of Donbass, announced by Poroshenko, preferring, for the sake of political dividends, to grind into dust human destinies and national wealth, which has been created for decades.

No one knows the exact number of civilian casualties. According to the official version of the Ukrainian Ministry of Health, their number is approaching 600; according to the militia, it has exceeded a thousand. But how can you keep a record of the dead if people die almost every minute? How to account for people who die from their wounds later? How to count those who will die in the near future without the necessary treatment or due to a lack of medicine?

How to count unborn children? In what category should those born in another state be included? Hundreds of thousands of residents of Novorossiya fled to Russia from Ukraine, although not everyone received official refugee status, which allows the UN to determine their number at 80 thousand people. The rest, in the opinion of “enlightened” Europe and the United States, came to visit their grandmothers and to relax in the Rostov mountains.

The reason why the world community shrugs off the real state of affairs in the Donbass, does not see the refugees point-blank and does not notice the war crimes of Ukraine is simple. The populous, thriving region lies in ruins, thousands of crimes against humanity are waiting in the wings, and if you admit that Kyiv is wrong in any way, even for a second, you discern the truth, you will have to unwind the whole tangle along this thread. A tangle that will stretch to the very origins of the “Maidan”. Neither Europe nor the United States can allow Kyiv to lose face, because then it will become clear how deep their own hands are in the blood. Many frauds and frauds will come to light, which will cost the reputation of dozens of Western politicians and strike a blow to the system itself. Therefore, it is much more profitable to grieve over the Boeing shot down by the Ukrainians than to see the Ukrainian “dryers” wiping out cities along with the population from the face of the earth.

Combatants are dying in even greater numbers than civilians. This is not so shocking when it comes to professional soldiers, contract soldiers or psychopathic nationalists. But almost 90% of the militia are recent civilians. And among the Ukrainian troops, a significant number of citizens until recently lived a peaceful life and were thrown into this meat grinder against their will. It is they who, having no experience, having received neither training nor appropriate uniforms, most often die under the bullets and shells of the militia, abandoned to death by their incompetent commanders. According to rough estimates carried out by journalists and bloggers, the number of Ukrainian military deaths has already exceeded 3 thousand people.

True, the Ukrainian government reduces this figure by an order of magnitude. The Ukrainian military understands that it is impossible to prematurely scare cannon fodder with truthful information about real losses. Otherwise, the “heroes” will hide en masse from mobilization, and mothers will even more often block highways and fall under the wheels of cars. Otherwise, the military registration and enlistment offices will go up in flames, and riots will begin at assembly points and in military units.

In addition, Kyiv is never against saving money on its own citizens, so concealing the facts of the death of soldiers is beneficial not only for preserving morale, but also for saving budget funds that could be used to compensate relatives. So Ukrainian soldiers disappear without a trace, shamelessly desert in entire platoons and kill each other in drunken “everyday life.”

At the moment, the situation in Donbass has frozen at a bifurcation point. The militia is united into a single fist, motivated and embittered, but is still significantly inferior to the Ukrainians in the number of infantry and equipment. The Ukrainian military colossus, in turn, used almost all available resources. Neither side is able to achieve a decisive advantage, which means that the war may well continue for months, and perhaps longer. And this means that there will be more and more casualties and destruction, new hordes of refugees.

This madness must stop. Moreover, the truce should not be concluded on the hypocritical principles proposed by Poroshenko and Co. Real peace is only possible under conditions similar to Oleg Tsarev's peace plan. Complete withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the region, amnesty for all militias and political prisoners, adoption of a constitutional act defining the status of the people's republics.

However, Ukraine’s ability to fulfill the four points of Tsarev’s peace plan regarding compensation from Kyiv to the families of the victims, those deprived of shelter, business owners, etc. looks doubtful. There is simply no money in the Ukrainian economy for this. And it will not appear, given that budget-forming revenues from Donbass are a thing of the past.

The Ukrainian government and Ukrainians themselves must understand that now they still have a chance to stop and stop the violence. It is possible to try to evade responsibility for your crimes while maintaining the remnants of your dignity. Otherwise, Ukraine will never win this war. The only thing she can conquer is a scorched territory with a people who hate everything Ukrainian.

And retribution will come as soon as the Western world no longer needs the current Ukrainian political pygmies. The magic cap over Ukraine will melt, and the sensation-hungry Western media will gnaw every crime of the Ukrainian government to the bone. And then the words “Ukraine” and “Ukrainian” will become abusive. But there is still a chance to stop...
