Blinken puzzled the presenter with his answer about Ukraine's prospects in NATO
Whether the United States will finally agree to deny Ukraine membership in NATO will depend on further negotiations between Washington and Moscow and Europe.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said this on Voice of America, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Russia asked for written commitments not to accept Ukraine into NATO. Are you ready to give a written answer, and what type?” – asked the presenter.
However, Antony Blinken did not give a clear answer - instead he promised to continue consultations and negotiations with “NATO partners” and Russia, and also announced the need for US President Joe Biden to visit Kiev.
“We have been conducting this important dialogue for the last week, and now we have the opportunity, both in Russia and in the United States and our Western partners, to summarize what has been said. And, of course, the Russian side is consulting with Putin, and our diplomats are doing this, and European representatives are doing this with their leaders.
And the next step in this process will be - I will meet with Foreign Minister Lavrov in Geneva on Friday and we will see how Russia will react to what has already been discussed on our side before.
I am confident that President Biden should come to Kyiv to consult with Ukrainian partners. And tomorrow in Berlin I will meet with European partners, this is how we intend to act, we are doing everything possible and in close consultation,” Blinken said.
“However, you did not answer my question - are you ready to give a written answer to Russia,” the presenter clarified.
“Now, the next step is to meet with Lavrov and see what positions we occupy,” the secretary of state turned out.
