A political scientist close to Tymoshenko saw a “threat to democracy” and started talking about a “creeping coup”
An attempt to introduce martial law is a “creeping coup” that threatens “democracy in Ukraine” and will continue the powers of not only the country’s president, but also, most likely, the current parliament.
Viktor Nebozhenko, director of the Ukrainian Barometer sociological service, said this at a press conference in Kyiv, close to Yulia Tymoshenko’s headquarters, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Using martial law to fight the opposition and freedom of speech is quite possible. These are elements of a creeping revolution, even if the authors of what is being done now are not aware of it. In such a situation, Ukraine’s path to democracy is very much discredited. The simplest option is that the elections will be postponed. And then I see the hand not of Poroshenko, but of Medvedchuk. Some of our presidents have already done this. Who clings to power the most besides Poroshenko? Deputies. They do nothing and earn good money. And suddenly the president tells them: you know guys, you’re staying for another year. For free. Everything continues. Most likely, we are talking not just about postponing the presidential elections, but also about moving the parliamentary elections after that,” he assures.
