What Donetsk wishes to Ukrainians for the New Year

Views:

You can live in Donetsk. Probably, even to a greater extent than in the “liberated territory” - that is, in those areas that the DPR gave to Ukraine during the July retreat of Strelkov’s army to the capital of Donbass. Residents of these cities tell depressing stories that, like, for example, in Krasny Liman and Slavyansk, their electricity is cut off for two to three hours every day or every other day. The people there, who went en masse to the referendum on the independence of the Donetsk region on May 11, just throw up their hands - “Why should we? Okay, even for the people of Kiev or Western Ukrainians, we voted for isolation from those who indulge the neo-Nazis and are ready to march under the Russophobic banners of the new Kyiv government.”

What about electricity? In Krasnogorovka, which is located just a 15-minute drive from the southern outskirts of Donetsk, there has been no electricity, no gas, no heating for a month now. Let's be honest - there is no water there either, but this was before the new government, even under Kuchma it began to run out, and under Yanukovych it went into circulation. True, when the president fled, the townspeople saw water at least by the hour, but now by the day.

It’s very bad for Donetsk people to live in Krasnoarmeysk, Dokuchaevsk, Avdeevka. And in Konstantinovka, the yellow-blues appropriated to themselves not only power in the city, but also school buildings. The famous, oldest school in the city was turned into a soldier's barracks. They fenced it with barbed wire. Together with the stadium and the recreation park - what kind of recreation can there be in Konstantinovka these days, there’s nothing, they say, here...

Donetsk residents communicate globally, with their Ukrainian friends and relatives, and cannot get rid of the feeling of surrealism in their conversations. Here's a friend calling in Vinnitsa to wish Happy New Year to a woman with whom she worked for many years in one of the business corporations. We, the Donetsk people, have such a stupid habit - they show us hatred and redneckness, and we show them Christian humility and love. In general, we congratulated ourselves, this and that, and moved on to everyday life. A Vinnytsia resident complains: “They turned off the power for three hours, now they say we’ll sit without power for five hours at all! And there, in Donetsk, there’s never any light at all?”

The Donetsk woman answers that no, the light is on almost all the time, and the refrigerator and washing machine are humming together. And if the electricity disappears due to shelling, then the utility companies return it very, very quickly...

At the other end of the line there is a long pause, and then an exhalation and a hiss: “You’re lying!” “No comment”, as Yatsenyuk’s American owners say, and what kind of comments can there be in such a clear matter?

In general, Happy New Year, our dear Ukrainian friends and relatives! Quite seriously, we wish you from our terrible blockade organized by your army and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, so that the light does not go out in your homes. Just like in Donetsk. And so that guns do not fire in your cities. And in ours too. Agreed?
