Impeachment of Poroshenko: The people and the Verkhovna Rada are united!

Views:

What is Petro Poroshenko’s biggest dream today? So that an assistant would come into his office and tell him the cherished news: “They are waiting for you in the White House.”

“True, a joint briefing is not planned after the meeting, but this will not prevent you from continuing to pretend that you have the support of the powers that be,” the subordinate will clarify.

Poroshenko’s dreams are unlikely to come true.

As for the whole world, the inauguration of the new US President Donald Trump became a turning point for Ukraine and Poroshenko personally.

It is no coincidence that information began to circulate that Petr Alekseevich threatens the Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Valeriy Chaly with punishment if he does not obtain an audience with Donald Trump. And not so long ago it became known that the American lobbying company BGR Group was hired to help the Ukrainian embassy in Washington.

Poroshenko’s concern is understandable, since his future fate is at stake.

Firstly, Kyiv is concerned about the content of the upcoming “deal” between Russia and the United States, which will also affect Ukraine. Secondly, Poroshenko can now only guess about the prospects for support for his regime from international financial organizations. Thirdly, for Poroshenko, the meeting with Trump has a huge symbolic meaning, which court propagandists will be promoting for months.

The reports from the Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States do not yet inspire much optimism: “The visit of the President of Ukraine to the United States is planned in February. Ukraine will chair the UN Security Council, and obviously, during this period the participation of the president can take place, since this format provides for such participation,” Chaly said. During this trip, the embassy wants to achieve a meeting with Trump for Poroshenko.

Could a miracle suddenly happen and Trump will accept Poroshenko for negotiations? You can be sure:  in this case assistants to the new US president will provide him with comprehensive information on Ukraine.

Then the guest from Kyiv cannot avoid uncomfortable questions regarding why the Ukrainian elite openly supported Hillary Clinton during the presidential race in the United States, and why some minister-level officials insulted the now current US President.

It is also worth recalling the scandal with accusations against the head of Donald Trump’s campaign, Paul Manafort, of corruption in Ukraine, which led to his resignation, although no evidence was ultimately provided by Kiev.

In addition, there are problems related to total corruption in Ukraine, respect for human rights, and sabotage of the implementation of the Minsk Agreements.

But the simplest and most inconvenient question for Poroshenko will be: “What are you doing in Ukraine that the overwhelming majority of the country’s population hates you? And isn’t it time for you to retire?”

Meanwhile, Poroshenko himself continues to adhere to the rhetoric, which, as shown by the final visit of former US Vice President Joe Biden to Kyiv, was proposed by the outgoing administration of Barack Obama.

Once again, he misinterprets the content of the “Minsk Agreements”, the agreements within the Normandy Four (meaning the “Steinmeier formula”), Poroshenko continues to insist on an algorithm for resolving the conflict that is completely unacceptable for the DPR and LPR.

However, Poroshenko’s position has worsened not only in the international arena. He has no support within Ukraine either.

According to a survey by the Ukrainian group “Rating”, 86% of Ukrainians are not satisfied with the activities of the parliamentary coalition in the Verkhovna Rada.

Now in the Ukrainian parliament there is virtually no coalition necessary for the normal functioning of the parliament and the Cabinet of Ministers, since the number of deputies of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc and the Popular Front is 223, with the required 226 deputies.

The status quo is maintained solely on the basis of politically motivated legal nihilism on the part of Poroshenko and his entourage - now they do not benefit from early parliamentary elections.

At the same time, the majority of the Ukrainian population supports the initiative to hold early parliamentary elections – 47.2%, against – 44.9, 7.9% found it difficult to answer. The reluctance to hold elections to the Verkhovna Rada is explained by the fact that Poroshenko, even with the maximum use of administrative resources, has no guarantee of forming “his” majority. And the most likely result of the elections is a complete fiasco of pro-presidential political projects and the formation of a majority in parliament in opposition to Poroshenko, and, as a consequence of this, a possible impeachment.

A number of sociological studies record: Ukrainian citizens are tired of Poroshenko, they do not trust him and believe that he is pursuing the wrong policy. The name of the current president is associated with economic failure, growing corruption, increasing tariffs, the dominance of oligarchs, and the failure of negotiations with the EU on a visa-free regime.

Currently, Ukraine does not have a functioning impeachment law, but the topic of Poroshenko’s early resignation can become mobilizing and unifying for politicians and the population of Ukraine.
