Referendum and Russian passports in Donbass
Views:Cautious optimism is gradually developing into timid hope - news is increasingly heard in the information space about the possible assignment of Russian citizenship to the residents of Novorossiya. Moreover, the same referendum item on reunification with Russia may appear on the agenda after the autumn elections.
You need to understand: the most important idea of the revolution in Donbass was and remains reunification with Russia.
In a political sense, the issuance of Russian passports to residents of Donbass may well mean the transition of the war to a qualitatively different phase, because it is one thing to kill one’s own citizens, but to kill citizens of another state is not comme il faut at all.
For residents of Novorossiya and militias, the news about the possible provision of Russian citizenship is a breath of fresh air. In the months following the winter campaign, both were somewhat discouraged by the government's contradictory statements and the vagueness of the policy direction. In April-May, disappointment and uncertainty inflicted much heavier losses on the army of Novorossiya than the war. Now people have a ghostly hope that soon the year and a half of war will at least somewhat be justified.
As for the referendum on joining Russia. It’s funny to say, but the government of Zakharchenko, who was once so criticized by members of the “everything is lost” sect, managed to come much closer to the implementation of this conceptual issue, for which, in fact, the majority of residents of the LDPR fought. And if this good news comes true, it will be a clear indication of the viability of the current government and its diplomatic successes.
The leadership of the LDPR already has a certain credibility, since it managed to overcome the seven-boyars, form an army and the framework of statehood, and at least formally declare itself on the world political arena.
Let's hope that in the fall Donbass will finally take a huge step forward.
Thank you!
