I don’t want to be a hero of Ukraine

Views:

When Petro Poroshenko took power in Ukraine into his own hands, he promised Ukrainian men mountains of gold, just to tempt them with a trip to the so-called ATO zone. The campaign in Donbass was supposed to be a cakewalk, an exciting and highly paid safari, after which Ukrainian soldiers would receive honors and unprecedented benefits.

However, it soon became clear that Ukrainian patriots faced death and injury in the steppes of the LDPR, families living from hand to mouth and poverty. This is the price of Poroshenko’s promises.

The number of Kherson residents who died in Donbass, according to official statements, is in the dozens, although the real figure is almost a military secret, since “there were no losses.” In addition, soldiers from the Kherson region very soon found out that it is not so easy to obtain the status of an ATO participant - the army leadership is doing everything to reduce government spending to the detriment of its vassals, and local governments, following an unspoken order from Kyiv, “mix their tracks” ”, dumping tons of contradictory documents on the demobilized and widows.

In mid-February, when the Ukrainian army suffered a crushing defeat, the vice-mayor of Kherson Sergei Cherevko announced that in 2015 only one person received the status of an ATO participant. The official complained that the legislation was controversial, although last year this status was granted much more simply.

By the way, Social Security was also much more generous last year. Last year, 10 families of Kherson residents who died in Donbass received one-time cash assistance in the amount of 50 thousand UAH. In addition, since November, 7 families that lost their breadwinner received monthly assistance from the local budget in the amount of UAH 5 thousand. Considering the benefits for housing and communal services, this money was enough to survive until it warms up. Apparently, today there are no funds for such support in the deficit budget, and therefore the number of men who received the status of an ATO participant decreased sharply in 2015.

The Poroshenko regime never protected its soldiers from the banks - a sharp rise in the dollar turned foreign currency loans into an unbearable burden, but the state did not prepare any legislative mechanisms to help ATO participants. The situation with reinstatement is no better - 2014 knocked out the industry and agricultural sector of the Kherson region. How to restore employees if factories work 1-2 days a week, and farms this year practically do not sow anything and save on every penny?

Those returning from the war in Donbass can only count on a handshake from the mayor, a children's choir singing a patriotic song, a bouquet of flowers and free help from a social psychologist who will try to rehabilitate the psyche raped by the war.

And after demobilization, those who are demobilized face tedious attempts to prove their involvement in the war in Donbass, search for work and ways to survive - the average salary in the Kherson region is about 2,5-3 thousand UAH.

Speaking about economic difficulties, we should not forget about the social aspect. Unlike the western and central regions, the majority of the population of the Kherson region traditionally has connections with Russia and speaks Russian. Patriotic hysteria today has practically dried up - only the most fanatical or the most socially protected are shouting slogans, while ordinary people are clearly no longer happy with the “achievements” of the new government.

Information about the bloody massacre taking place in the Donbass is increasingly breaking through the barriers of censorship. In this situation, the “heroes” of the ATO can hardly count on a particularly favorable attitude.

I personally have absolutely no sympathy for the fate of the demobilized Ukrainian punitive forces, but the problem goes far beyond morality and ethics. The whole question is whether these people, with a broken psyche and, in most cases, weapons taken from the front, will unite into robber groups and enrich themselves using methods that have become familiar in the Donbass? After all, given the deplorable level of training and the even lower level of motivation of law enforcement officers, in fact, there will be no one to fight back such groups.

This question becomes more relevant with each ATO participant returning home only to discover that neither he nor his family is needed by Ukraine. Today, demobilized soldiers receive at least minimal assistance, however, when their number finally exceeds the frail budgetary capabilities, Ukrainian cities, without any participation of Novorossiya, can plunge into bloody chaos, next to which the “dashing 90s” will seem like child’s play.
