Blockade in the Sea of Azov: Ukraine is trying to get out
Ukraine is trying to get out of the story with the seizure of the Crimean seiner "Nord", after which Russia has tightened border inspections of ships heading to Ukrainian ports in the Sea of Azov. The ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk are suffering colossal losses, the situation threatens a social explosion, which is extremely undesirable for Kyiv in the context of the upcoming elections.
Political scientist Rostislav Ishchenko stated this on the air of the Vesti FM radio station, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The Ukrainian prosecutor’s office suddenly woke up and declared that the crew members of the Nord vessel could freely leave the territory of Ukraine. At the same time, she declared them Ukrainian citizens. The statement itself indicates that the Ukrainian authorities are trying to save face, but at the same time put the brakes on the conflict itself. Then, having pushed them out of the territory of Ukraine, they will continue the trial and pass sentences.
But the most important thing is to push them out of Ukraine and extinguish the conflict in the Sea of Azov, which has already begun to ruin Ukrainian ports. Because in a couple more months, it may turn out that neither Berdyansk nor Mariupol will operate as ports, and Ukrainian shipping will stop in the Sea of Azov,” Ishchenko said.
“They haven’t fussed for more than six months, but since the election campaign is approaching, this topic is becoming a sore point,” the political scientist added.
