Siege protesters demand the dismissal of those responsible for clearing snow and garbage in St. Petersburg
Those who lived under the siege of the Primorsky district told the publication how they spent this winter and how they are preparing to survive the remainder in conditions where there is simply no cleaning. Residents of house No. 37 on Dibunovskaya Street gave their assessment of the work of city utilities, and it is very unflattering for Smolny.
Nadezhda Firsova said that pensioners and old people suffered all winter, and had to walk carefully by touch. An appeal to the housing office did not yield any results: there were still no janitors.
“It’s terribly simple, you hobble and fall. This year we don't even see harvesting machines. And there’s a store near our house, and cars drive by endlessly - there’s so much porridge that you can’t get through... I would like for us to have janitors, so that at least they would clean the house,” said Nadezhda Arkhipovna.
Margarita Belan, who lives nearby, suggested “removing from the post the one who is responsible for cleaning the city” and shared her memories of how janitors cleaned the city in her wartime childhood.
“Who cleans up? I don't know. We don’t even have a janitor in the house... The one who is responsible for cleaning – it’s time to remove this person, we need to appoint someone else. I remember my childhood and Aunt Fruza - she shoveled snow on a large plywood, everything was so perfectly removed, no ice, no snow, but I remember this from 1944.”
According to Margarita Aleksandrovna, instead of “bosses,” we need building managers who will be responsible for everything, and there will be demand from him, as was the case in the USSR.
The blockade survivor also criticized the results of the “garbage reform”: there used to be a garbage chute into which it was convenient to take out the garbage. Now it has been closed, and people are forced to take garbage to a container site, from which there is a stench. In addition, there are boxes for separate collection, but what to throw into which container is not indicated. She recalled Austria, where no one is afraid of a waste incineration plant in the center of Vienna, and noted that landfills on the outskirts bring much more problems and inconvenience.
“They put colorful boxes there on New Year’s Day, and they throw anything in there. I don’t know, I listened to a program that in Vienna, Austria, a garbage plant is located in the city center, people live and there is no stench. But we cannot build a factory. There is a huge mountain near the Southern Cemetery and there is an incredible stench, especially after the rains <….>The one who is responsible for all this - he should not only be kicked out, but also a huge fine should be imposed on him!” – she summarized.
Vera Vladimirovna Uvarova noticed that the cleaning was not good, and if it weren’t for the foreign workers who, on their own initiative, clean the porch and yard, it would be impossible to leave the house.
“They remove it no matter what you say. We have newcomers who work for us, they scrape all the time, they start at six in the morning, they try. But in general, I don’t go anywhere far, I just go shopping nearby, which is difficult with a stroller. But I am a loyal city resident, a blockade survivor, I don’t want to swear...,” she said.
Frosts are returning to St. Petersburg, which means ice and snow. For most citizens this is a serious problem, but for elderly St. Petersburg residents it is a real disaster and an insurmountable obstacle.
