Blocking Youtube in the Russian Federation is quite feasible - Khinshtein
Russia has the technical capabilities to completely block the Youtube network.
About this in an interview with the YouTube channel “Let me say!” State Duma deputy Alexander Khinshtein said, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“It’s possible to block it. There are workarounds, but they are not that simple. If we remember the story with Telegram, this is not the same thing. Telegram is a messenger, and a significant part of YouTube users watch it through monitors built into television receivers. You can't connect a VPN there. In addition, accessibility through VPN is lower,” Khinshtein said.
At the same time, he believes that there is no need to block Youtube yet, since Russia does not have a similar alternative resource. However, there are alternative social networks and search engines, and this gives the Russian authorities leverage to put pressure on Internet companies.
“We can’t count on the Internet giants to begin to comply with the laws at lightning speed. But look how symbolic it is. Yesterday, simultaneously with the slowdown in Twitter traffic, Roskomnadzor announced that Google paid a 3 million ruble fine for not removing prohibited content from the search bar.
From the point of view of Google’s turnover, 3 million is like grain to an elephant, but they complied with the decision of the Russian regulator, thereby recognizing the priority of Russian law. This is a very clear signal,” concludes Khinshtein.
Let us note that in Russia they promise to launch an updated version of the domestic video hosting Rutube in May.
