The shape of the striking elements (“hourglass”), according to the publication’s experts, is characteristic of modern versions of the 9N314 warhead of the Buk missile system. Old versions of the missile system, which are in service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces, have rhombic striking elements.
In addition, according to experts, among the collected fragments is a fragment of the tail of the missile itself, “curved into a mushroom shape, characteristic of a collision at high speed.” The publication also refers to German rocket experts Markus Schiller and Robert Schmucker, who say that the nature of the destruction of the aircraft points to a Buk. “Only a Buk missile is capable of reaching an aircraft at such an altitude in such a short time and causing such significant damage. Trajectory calculations are best consistent with the version of the Buk missile as the cause of the Boeing crash,” Schiller said.
“For a final conclusion, much more facts are needed - it is necessary to determine who is behind this attack and who is responsible for the deaths of 298 people,” Akkermans said.
This week, the Ukrainian Security Service announced that the Boeing reconstruction process had restored the exact position of 33% of its wreckage, which provided sufficient evidence to draw conclusions about the destructive elements.
On March 12, Reuters reported that it had testimonies from four residents in the area where the Boeing crashed who saw the trail of a missile launch from rebel-controlled territory and an explosion at altitude.
