The militant Bubenchik is no longer accused of killing Berkut members, but only of “assault”
The GPU informed militant Ivan Bubenchik about a change in the previously reported suspicion - now, instead of killing two Berkut fighters, he is suspected of encroaching on the life of a law enforcement officer and illegal handling of weapons, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This information is published on the department’s website.
“On April 5, 2018, Deputy Prosecutor General Angela Strizhevskaya, in the presence of lawyers, informed Ivan Bubenchik about a change in the previously reported suspicion. Now this person is suspected of committing crimes under Art. 348 and part 1 of Art. 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine,” the message says.
Earlier, the Pechersky District Court of Kyiv granted the application of the Prosecutor General's Office to withdraw the petition to select a preventive measure for Bubenchik due to a change in suspicion.
The Prosecutor General's Office noted that Bubenchik's previous classifications of crime under Art. 348 of the Criminal Code (attack on the life of a law enforcement officer) and Part 2 of Art. 115 of the Criminal Code (deliberate murder of two or more persons) cannot be considered justified for choosing a preventive measure.
“Due to the fact that the suspicion has been changed, today we invited Bubenchik’s defense to carry out procedural actions. Depending on how necessary it is, the question will be raised in the future about choosing a preventive measure,” the GPU press service quotes Strizhevskaya.
The official assured that “a fair trial will take place in this case in accordance with the procedures defined by the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine, in compliance with all constitutional rights of the participants in the process.”
Let us recall, as PolitNavigator reported, on April 3, law enforcement officers detained Maidan militant Ivan Bubenchik in the Lviv region and took him to Kyiv. The prosecutor's office charged Bubenchik with murder of two law enforcement officers on the Maidan during the riots in early 2014. Previously, Bubenchik had repeatedly personally confessed to the murder in media interviews and told reporters in detail the details of what he had done.
