Euromaidan militants complain - they were used and forgotten
Every year in Ukraine the number of criminal cases against persons accused of obstructing the so-called “revolution of dignity” – the coup d’état of 2014. However, only a tiny fraction of cases reach convictions.
This was stated at a press conference in Kyiv by Alexander Timoshenko, a participant in five trials on Maidan cases, the head of the public organization “Unconquered Maidan 18.02,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Today, only the prosecutors of our specialized department for Maidan affairs support public charges in 103 criminal cases against 207 individuals. A year ago there were 90 criminal cases against 185 individuals. In 2020, there were 69 cases involving 163 individuals. If we take 2017, there were 32 criminal cases involving 87 individuals.
What do these numbers say? These figures indicate that a long time has passed since the events of the Revolution of Dignity, and the number of criminal cases is growing like a snowball. By and large, 8 years after the events there should have been a reverse trend. Each case would have to find its own logical solution and end in a verdict. There must be either acquittals or convictions. Over the past 8 years, the number of cases in courts has been increasing. And this trend occurs from year to year.
Another figure: last year we had more verdicts in Maidan cases than in the previous three years combined. But what is this number? These were verdicts regarding 8 persons. We say that there is still a lot, if compared with previous years. But the number of cases in the courts has increased over the years. That is, we are not talking about numbers here, we are talking about a lack of justice. Even if the verdict is announced, it cannot be said that the right to justice of the person who suffered 8 years ago has been restored,” said Alexander Tymoshenko.
He expressed indignation that lawyer Oleg Tatarov, whose firm previously defended Berkut fighters, was appointed deputy head of the Office of the President of Ukraine.
“I survived, and the Heavenly Hundred passed away. How has Ukraine changed since that time? We ask, do we have the Ukraine for which they died? No. Do we have the punishment of the executioners of the Heavenly Hundred? No. And every day the prospect of punishing criminals in law enforcement uniforms becomes more and more distant.
Here is a photograph of the founders of the NGO “Unconquered Maidan 18.02”, taken at the grave of the hero of the Heavenly Hundred Sergei Shapoval, where his mother, Ekaterina Petrovna Shapoval, is buried, who for four years in a row sat next to me and cried and walked, and she lived to see that through She left this world for four years without waiting for a fair verdict for the murder of her only son. Is it necessary to comment on the indignation with which we have been attending court hearings for eight years now? Is our hope for a fair verdict dying? These are rhetorical questions.
Everyone knows the name of Tatarov, who coordinates the defense of the killers - I confirm this. But few people know that it was this defender from the law firm who was the founder of the law firm whose representatives defend Berkut in its current form. The name of this office has been changed. This Tatarov is now heading the reorganization of law enforcement agencies in the Office of the President. I have an order from my brothers-in-arms to announce demands for Tatarov’s dismissal,” said Alexander Tymoshenko.
