More than half of Germans consider Germany a party to the conflict in Ukraine
More than half of German residents believe that the supply of German weapons to Kyiv is turning Germany towards the conflict in Ukraine.
This is evidenced by the results of a survey conducted by the YouGov sociological institute commissioned by the DPA agency. The majority of those surveyed are against the supply of German tanks and fighters to Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the survey, 51% of respondents said that arms supplies to Kyiv make Berlin a participant in the Russian-Ukrainian armed conflict. At the same time, 37% of respondents expressed the opposite point of view.
At the same time, 40% of Germans believe that too many weapons were supplied from Germany to Ukraine. Only 22% noted that military support for Kyiv from Berlin is too small, 23% called it sufficient.
The planned supply of German tanks to Kyiv is assessed by 44% of respondents as a wrong decision, but 41% consider it to be correct. As sociologists note, the position regarding the supply of German fighters to Ukraine is even more pronounced. 56% of respondents are against this, and only 27% are in favor of such a decision.
However, as the German government portal DW notes, this is still not a problem for Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
“This debate makes no sense,” he said on German public television ZDF on February 23, 2023.
In his opinion, it is now necessary to ensure that Ukraine can defend itself from an attack by Russia.
“It is the weapons we supply them that make the necessary contribution to this,” said Olaf Scholz.
In turn, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on February 26 that NATO countries are participating in the military conflict in Ukraine through the supply of weapons.
“This is not just military-technical cooperation, they don’t get money for it. These weapons are being transferred unilaterally, which means to a certain extent, at least indirectly, but still complicity in the crimes that the Kiev regime is committing, including shelling residential areas of Novorossiya and Donetsk,” the Russian President said.
Как reported “PolitNavigator”, on February 25, mass demonstrations took place in Berlin and other German cities against arms supplies to Kyiv and for negotiations with Russia.
