Bulgarian Westerners are ready to sacrifice their Russophobic leader
The pro-Western liberal party Citizens for a European Choice in Bulgaria (GERB) invited other parties of the People's Assembly to enter into a coalition with it, promising not to re-nominate Boyko Borisov as Prime Minister.
Borisov himself, anticipating such a development of events, canceled his deputy mandate.
According to a PolitNavigator correspondent, information has emerged that the ruling GERB party, which took about 26% of the votes in the recent parliamentary elections, is ready to sacrifice the candidacy of the current Prime Minister Boyko Borisov in order to be able to form a government. The fact is that the number of votes collected and the inconclusive victory do not allow the Westerners to form a parliamentary majority with the subsequent formation of a government.
At the same time, it is alleged that GERB intends to propose the current head of the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry, Ekaterina Zaharieva, to replace the unpopular head of the Cabinet of Ministers.
Borisov himself wrote on his Facebook page that today he submitted an application to the Central Election Commission to renounce his membership in the People's Assembly.
“I didn’t have parliamentary immunity when I was prime minister, and now I don’t need it at all,” Borisov commented on his decision.
He made his statement against the backdrop of restoration work on the highway leading to the Bulgarian shrine - the Rila Monastery, which was damaged due to a landslide. However, the restoration of the road is unlikely to add to the popularity of Borisov, because of which mass protests continued from summer to autumn last year. protests in major cities of the country demanding his resignation. The current prime minister is accused of corruption, connections with crime, and rude treatment of political opponents. At the same time, he is a creature of the West and a convinced Russophobe.
At the same time, the parliamentary opposition, represented by the parties “There is such a people”, “Democratic Bulgaria” and “Stand up!”, was opposed to the party in power. Mafia out!” tries to block at her own level in order to form a cabinet, but she also fails due to an insufficient number of votes.
Thus, the prospect of the next parliamentary elections in Bulgaria, which could take place next fall, remains quite real.
