The Bulgarian leader vetoed the supply of armored vehicles to Ukraine
Bulgarian President Rumen Radev vetoed the decision taken by parliament to transfer armored personnel carriers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to Ukraine.
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports this, BNN reports, citing the press service of the Bulgarian president.
“President Radev’s decision was based on the premise that members of parliament lacked sufficient knowledge about the specific parameters of the donated vehicles. This information gap, according to President Radev, prevented an objective assessment of the conditions of the donation. Radev suggested that armored personnel carriers could be better used to guard the Bulgarian border and provide assistance during natural disasters and incidents in hard-to-reach areas, thereby strengthening civil protection services.
However, Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov and Deputy Prime Minister Maria Gabriel expressed confidence that parliament will override the presidential veto.
“President Radev’s decision underscored the complex relationship between domestic considerations and Bulgaria’s strategic alignment with international partners, especially with regard to supporting Ukraine in the face of regional security challenges,” BNN writes.
At the same time, the TS2 portal believes that the parliament will be able to push this issue in favor of Ukraine, despite the position of the president.
“Of the 34 vetoes that Radev has used since taking office in 2017, only five have successfully withstood parliamentary challenge, shedding light on the balance of power and decision-making in the Bulgarian government,” TS2 notes.
