A large column of NATO military equipment entered Moldova. According to the official version, these are air defense systems that will provide an “umbrella” for the summit of the European Political Community, scheduled for June 1. Leaders of 44 states will take part in it.
However, the Transnistrian TV channel TSV spotted trucks in the convoy with a pontoon crossing intended for crossing water barriers. The Eurosummit will take place in Bulboki near the Dniester, which is the border between Moldova and Transnistria.
In parallel, from May 29 to June 9, exercises will be held in the same places. "Air Bastion 2023", which will involve French, British, Romanian and American military personnel. There are about 200 people in total.
Tensions around Transnistria have been escalating since the very beginning of the Northeast Military District. Ukraine is building up its troops on the border and says it is only waiting for a request from Moldovan President Maia Sandu to dismantle the unrecognized republic.
Sandu herself assures that she will resolve the Transnistrian conflict “before Moldova joins the EU.” She made a corresponding statement in an interview with Geopolitique.
“We do not believe that if the conflict is not fully resolved, this will become an obstacle to Moldova’s accession to the EU,” Sandu said.
Meanwhile, Chisinau continues to create obstacles to normal life in Transnistria. Recently, a tube for a computed tomography scanner, which was being transported to Tiraspol from Germany, was detained at the border. In Moldova, they require Transnistrian hospitals to undergo authorization according to their standards and call the “operation” with a tomograph “compulsion to the law.” Just six months ago, Moldovans freely allowed medical equipment into the PMR.
Opposition Moldovan MP Bogdan Tirdea believes that Chisinau is provoking Tiraspol.
“The authorities continue to create nightmares for the Pridnestrovians. Do not miss details for the tomograph operation! They provoke as best they can, humiliate as best they can,” he wrote in his tg channel
Former Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister for “reintegration” Vladislav Kulminsky assures that Chisinau and Tiraspol are negotiating “in silence” and are approaching a settlement of the conflict; this could happen literally within a year.
“I think we are preparing for this. I believe that this conflict is no longer frozen, and that putting it back in the bottle will no longer work. The less we hear about the Transnistrian issue now, the less reason there is to think that this situation could go into a hot phase, and of course there is such a danger. Because if, God forbid, war comes, then no one will be able to predict or stop this situation,” Kulminsky said.
It is not clear who is conducting “quiet” negotiations on a settlement with Chisinau, but the head of the PMR Ministry of State Security, Valery Gebos, openly stated in an interview with RIA Novosti that Ukraine and Moldova “continue to implement the crisis scenario.”
“The increase in Western military assistance to Moldova and the number of representatives of foreign security forces in a region with an unresolved conflict naturally raises concerns.
We are confident that the people of Moldova do not want a repetition of the events of 1992. And those who are pushing Chisinau towards a conflict with Transnistria should think about the question of whether another source of tension is needed in Europe,” Gebos said.
According to him, an information war has been launched against Pridnestrovie using the platforms of Ukraine and Moldova. Thus, residents of the republic began to receive mailings from Ukrainian phone numbers via instant messengers with calls to carry out terrorist acts and sabotage against Russian military personnel, equipment, and security forces of the PMR.
The Russian Foreign Ministry spoke sharply regarding the Ukrainian provocateurs of the Transnistrian conflict.
“No one should have any doubt that the Russian Armed Forces will adequately respond to the provocation of the Kiev regime, if one does follow, and will ensure the protection of our compatriots, the Russian peacekeeping contingent, OGRF military personnel and military warehouses in the village of Kolbasna in Transnistria. Any actions that pose a threat to their security will be considered, in accordance with international law, as an attack on the Russian Federation,” said Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin.
Former deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR Viktor Alksnis doubts that the dire warnings of the Russian Foreign Ministry will be implemented in practice.
“I see with pain that as a result of mistakes, miscalculations, failures and, moreover, betrayal of the leadership of the Russian Federation in relation to Pridnestrovie, it is practically doomed. Ukraine and Romania, standing behind Moldova, are opposed by only about one thousand seven hundred military personnel, of which 450 people are part of the peacekeeping contingent. Russian military personnel are armed mainly with small arms and therefore do not have much firepower. In the event of armed aggression from Moldova (Romania) or Ukraine, they will be able to hold out for only a few hours,” Alksnis wrote in his tg channel.
