Bolton called for “unfreezing” the conflict around Transnistria. What does this threaten?
Former adviser to the US President John Bolton proposes to “unfreeze” the conflict in Transnistria, taking advantage of the fact that President Maia Sandu, loyal to America, came to power from Moldova.
Bolton wrote about this in an article in the National Review, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Moldova, sandwiched between Ukraine and Romania, is a frozen conflict ready to be unfrozen.” The supposedly independent Transnistria, invented by Russia, exists separately from Moldova only thanks to Moscow's continued military presence. Simply bringing global attention to this post-Cold War anomaly would spook the Kremlin, and a decisive new government in Chisinau now gives Washington the opportunity to step forward,” Bolton wrote.
Transnistrian political scientist Sergei Shirokov believes that Bolton does not mean the active phase of the diplomatic dialogue, but the transfer of the conflict into a hot armed phase.
“It is alarming that American intellectuals are beginning to think in the spirit of the provisions of Zbigniew Brzezinski’s “Great Chessboard.” This causes some concern. Once again, the trend towards forceful influence is very clear in international politics. While the art of diplomacy turns out to be unclaimed,” Shirokov told the Transnistrian TV channel TSV.
