According to the publication’s interlocutor, Trump viewed relations with other countries through the prism of his own personal relationships with the leaders of these countries.

“And he really thought that if his personal relations, well, for example, with Putin, were normal, then relations between the United States and Russia were also fine. However, when you deal with Vladimir Putin, whether he likes you or not, he will continue to act as he believes Russian national interests require. He knows what he wants, he knows what he thinks he should do. And he continues to do so. And this approach simply did not fit in Trump’s head,” Bolton said.
