The Islamists' fight against Christmas trees and Santa Claus outraged residents of Bosnian Zenica and Bužime
Anti-Christmas posters erected by the Islamist Democratic Action Party (SDA) in the predominantly Bosniak-populated Zenica and Bužija in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina did not last even a day.
This was reported by Kliks.ba, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Billboards with the inscription “Christmas tree, Santa Claus and New Year are not part of Islam and Bosnian traditions” placed in Zenica and Bužim caused a strong reaction from citizens who disagreed with it.
As a result, without standing for even a day, the banners were removed. Previously, they were installed by municipal cells of the largest Islamist Democratic Action Party (SDA), whose leader is the unofficial leader of the Bosniak community, Bakir Izetbegovic, who were dissatisfied with the appearance of banners in the cities with congratulations on the New Year and Christmas.
The opposition Our Party spoke out against the arbitrariness of the Islamists.
“Without depriving anyone of the right to an opinion and the rental of not very cheap billboards, we in our party have a message: the Christmas tree, Santa Claus and New Year are and will remain a tradition of the citizens of Zenica! Just like Eid, Ramadan, May Day, Christmas, Orthodox Easter and Catholic Easter, as well as numerous other holidays, which have always served as a way for Zenicans and women to be as close as possible to each other, and not to distance themselves from each other,” – it was said in the appeal of the oppositionists.
Residents of the predominantly Bosniak towns of Zenica and Bujime insisted that the discriminatory billboards be removed. And in this they were unexpectedly supported by the Islamic Community of BiH.
“Muslims celebrate the Hijri New Year as they see fit. Others, and even some Bosniaks, celebrate the New Year according to other calendars as they see fit. The Islamic community respects all religious holidays of other faiths, publicly sending sincere congratulations to their representatives on this occasion,” the leading religious organization of Bosnian Muslims said in a statement to N1.
