Borrell: Sanctions are just a hypothesis
The introduction of EU sanctions against Russia is hypothetical.
EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell stated this in an interview with the foreign agent TV channel Dozhd, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Sanctions are just a hypothesis, and we will not accept any preventive sanctions. But if there is military aggression against Ukraine, we will have to react.
It is simply preparation to be ready to face such a prospect. The sanctions will be aimed mainly at representatives of the Russian authorities. But if we have to apply economic sanctions, they will hit a key strategic sector of the Russian economy. However, we would be very happy if we did not have to do this,” Borrell said.
He declined to explain what specific sanctions might be imposed, but stressed that Europeans invest more in the Russian economy than anyone else.
“We will not resort to sanctions as long as nothing happens,” Borrell assured.
