Borscht as a delicacy: Products in Ukraine are becoming more expensive at a breakneck pace
Main dishes in Ukraine over the year have risen in price several times more than the inflation rate, despite the fact that the average Ukrainian family spends about half of their income on food.
Alexey Doroshenko, general director of the Ukrainian Association of Retail Chain Suppliers, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“When we talk about inflation, this is separate. And the index of dishes is separate. For example, “borscht index”, i.e. the increase in the cost of borscht over the year is about 50%. Dumplings with meat – 45%. Roast – 42%. Dumplings with potatoes – 28%.
If we are talking about individual categories of products, then over the year the meat basket grew by 40%, vegetables - by 35%, dairy - by 17%. That is, it has little to do with inflation.
When we see that in each family more than 50% of income is spent on food and at the same time we say that inflation is 13%, and main dishes have become three times more expensive, then the question arises that there is a very big difference between incomes and expenses for different categories of the population. And it is growing every quarter,” said the market expert.
