The reason for this was the rise in prices for Ukrainian products.

“According to the daily monitoring of the project, over the week prices for table beets have increased on average by one and a half times, and today Ukrainian farmers are ready to ship this root crop for no less than 9-12 UAH/kg ($0,34-0,45/kg). Market participants explain such a rapid rise in prices by the rather limited supply of these products on the market - after all, many have pawned beets in the hope of selling them at the maximum price in the spring and are not yet ready to open vegetable storage facilities so as not to miss the opportunity to hit the big jackpot,” the publication notes.

Ukrainian beets are already more than three times more expensive than a year ago. As a result, beets began to be purchased in neighboring Poland at a price of 8,00-8,50 UAH/kg ($0,30-0,32/kg).

Economic expert Vsevolod Stepanyuk notes that one of the reasons for this situation was the inaction of the authorities.

“In Ukraine, the seasonal factor of price increases has always played a role. If earlier the actions of the authorities somehow smoothed out these seasonal “swings,” now they are manifested in all their glory. The price of the borscht set is going up very, very significantly,” he said in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.

Economist Alexander Okhrimenko noted that, in addition to beets, greenhouse products are also becoming more expensive, seeing the reason for the current situation in rising gas prices.

“Vegetables are now produced mainly in greenhouses, and their production requires energy. Since gas has become more expensive, the cost of greenhouse vegetables in Ukraine has increased significantly. At the same time, the demand for them fell, and people began to buy less. Therefore, such a curious situation has arisen that it is easier to bring them from abroad. Until the price of gas returns to normal levels, prices for Ukrainian products will remain high. Roughly speaking, there will be no cheap greenhouse vegetables in Ukraine in the foreseeable future,” the economist said.
