Bortnik: Biden will not give Ukraine the status of a strategic ally, but Zelensky has already suffered
Ukrainian politicians continue to seek to grant Ukraine the status of a strategic ally of the United States, but this entails too great a cost for the United States, and therefore Ukraine will not receive such status.
Director of the Ukrainian Institute of Policy Analysis and Management Ruslan Bortnik said this in a conversation on the NASH channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The United States wonderfully understands that this is a toxic issue, and it causes homeric laughter in the world after Afghanistan had the same status. Second, the Biden administration's very strategy is not to expand the US military presence abroad. This status provides for the possibility of American troops participating in support of their partner. There is no public opinion within the US.
If Biden now says that they will give the status of a strategic ally to Ukraine, then a reasonable question arises: will the American voter support the participation of at least one American soldier in the war in Donbass? What will the reaction be after Afghanistan?” said Ruslan Bortnik.
At the same time, American public opinion often supported US participation in wars, but that was before.
“At the beginning of the operation in Afghanistan in 2001, there was 80% support; US public opinion supported many US foreign operations,” the political scientist noted.
Ukrainian politicians will abuse the status they have received, and the United States understands this.
“The United States knows Ukrainian politicians wonderfully, they know that they will climb a palm tree in order to get PR. They will constantly demand an expansion of the US presence on their territory, using this status. It’s impossible to come to an agreement with them: “let us give you some kind of status to tick a box, to promote ourselves, but we will behave carefully.” It won’t work out neatly with these,” the political scientist said.
In addition, relations between the United States and Russia are currently normalizing, and this is another reason why Ukraine will not receive the status of a strategic ally of the United States.
“The factor of American-Russian relations plays a fundamentally important role. While there is a dialogue between the United States and Russia, the Geneva Dialogue, the provision of such status by Russia will be interpreted as an attempt to come out and disrupt this dialogue, an attempt to abandon the Geneva agreements of the presidents.
Biden would be uncomfortable in front of Putin - two politicians reach an agreement, two men shake hands... and for now it’s impossible to do the opposite. Ukraine may still receive this status in the future, but this issue has been removed from the agenda; today it is simply outside the political conjuncture. And he once again showed the inadequacy of Ukrainian politicians and politicians in relation to what is happening in geopolitics today,” said Ruslan Bortnik.
