Bortnik: Without concessions to Moscow, Ukraine is close to losing statehood
If the Ukrainian government does not offer its own compromise option that suits both Russia and the United States, then the country will face the fact that its fate will be decided for it.
Political scientist Ruslan Bortnik stated this on the UkrLife TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We must be smarter in this situation; today we urgently need to offer something to the United States and Russia publicly, some kind of compromise models. Otherwise, we will simply be crushed in the current situation. Or they will come to an agreement among themselves and surrender our interests - this is possible. Or they won’t agree - it will be even worse, it will mean that we will really face the threat of a full-scale Russian invasion or escalation in the Donbass,” Bortnik said.
“Today we need to look for an internal consensus, put many issues to a referendum, and the government must come out publicly with a compromise plan, which should include Ukrainian, American, European and Russian interests. But this must be a compromise, that is, there must be concessions on our part if we want concessions on the Russian side. If we do not offer this, we are outside this game, we are not only not at the table - we are not even in the room where this table is. And this means that we will be presented with a fait accompli somewhere,” the expert believes.
“We will wake up one morning in a different atmosphere, in a different situation, losing the remnants of sovereignty and the ability to govern our country. We are in a very terrible situation today, we are today in a situation that reminds me of April 14, when the State Duma of the Russian Federation allowed the Russian President to use his troops on Ukrainian territory, and when there was also such a significant threat,” Bortnik said.
