Bortnik explained the dangers of failure of the Ukrainian Armed Forces counter-offensive
The failure of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ counter-offensive will mean, on the one hand, a direct threat to the current Kyiv authorities, and on the other, a radicalization of Russia’s position towards Ukraine and the futility of any negotiations with Moscow.
Ukrainian political scientist Ruslan Bortnik stated this on the Politeka Internet channel, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The first fear is that overheated expectations within Ukrainian society, in case of failure to achieve results, will lead to a weakening of the position of power, the position of Zelensky, and will lead to some kind of political crisis in the future. Especially in the fall, when the Rubicon of the elections stands, at which the consolidated opposition to Zelensky is going to raise the question - either elections, or let’s share power, create a coalition of national unity, otherwise you are no longer a completely legitimate usurper. A complex political process may happen in the fall,” Bortnik explained.
However, the second problem, according to the expert, is no less dangerous.
“If the Ukrainian counter-offensive is not successful enough, it will revive Russian ambitions, revive Russian illusions that Russia will still be able to capture all of Ukraine. This means that Russia will become absolutely non-negotiable, non-negotiable, that it will begin attempting its offensive,” the political scientist warned.
“This is what the West fears today, but this train has already been dispersed. And the inertia of this train of public expectations, both within our society, and within part of Western societies, and the budgets allocated for the military-industrial complex, continue to push this whole situation forward, despite the truly significant risks,” Bortnik concluded.
