The publication writes that Brazil is ending cooperation with Ukraine in the Alcantara-Cyclone Space project. The decision was made by President Dilma Rousseff following the presentation of a report by an interministerial group in January. Kyiv has not yet been informed about the decision of the Brazilian side.
The project, which provides for commercial launches from the Brazilian Alcantara cosmodrome of the Cyclone-4 launch vehicle created in Ukraine, was created back in 2003 under the rule of President Kuchma. Brazil was creating the appropriate infrastructure at the spaceport, located near the equator in the state of Maranhão. The very geographical location of the Brazilian launch site allows you to save fuel when launching spacecraft. It was assumed that with the help of Cyclone-4 satellites would be launched into low and medium Earth orbits, as well as into an orbit transitioning to geostationary. Ukraine was building a launch vehicle and launch pad.
As Follia di Sao Paulo reports, Brazil's reason for abandoning the project was “the cost of the Cyclone-4 launch vehicle, which has become unaffordable in the face of budget cuts.”
“The Brazilian military, which traditionally oversees the national space program, has always been critical of the project of cooperation with Ukraine. In their opinion, the Alcantara-Cyclone Space project diverted funds that could have been used for its own development,” the publication writes.
Let us remember that last week Petro Poroshenko said that supposedly Ukraine and Turkey agreed on a multi-billion dollar space program.
