Lavrov briefing: Russia's position on Ukraine is becoming tougher

Ukraine, Germany and France, without doing anything to implement previously reached agreements to end the war in Donbass, are trying to impose another useless meeting on Russia.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated this during a briefing, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“On October 29, following the words of President Putin that what is important for us is not a meeting for the sake of a meeting, but meaningful contact, which should be based on the implementation of previous agreements, we sent our colleagues in Berlin, Paris and Kyiv our vision of what the draft final document for a possible ministerial meeting in the Normandy format.

It was honest, quite comprehensive, and covered all the key problems that the settlement of the internal Ukrainian crisis now faces, and, above all, the problem of the refusal of the Ukrainian leadership to do anything to fulfill its obligations,” Lavrov said.

According to the minister, after this, on October 30, he met with the head of the French Foreign Ministry, who proposed holding a meeting on November 11 in Paris.

“I told him that, firstly, I would like to get my colleagues’ reaction to meaningful proposals. Because it is the content side that takes priority, and not the protocol agreements “let’s see each other and pose in front of the television cameras.” We don't need such ostentatious performances. And he asked if he had seen the proposals sent to Paris.

The French minister answered negatively - he had not yet had time to watch them. But again he began to urgently emphasize the need to meet on November 11,” Lavrov added.

The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that Russian diplomats do not intend to meet without a specific agenda. In addition, Moscow has repeatedly stated that the date of November 11 does not suit the Kremlin.

“Nevertheless, the other day we again received a joint message from the foreign ministers of Germany and France, where November 11 is designated as almost no alternative date. I'm not even talking about diplomatic etiquette - this is simply humanly uncivilized.

We sent additional material to deal not with planning some events “for show”, but with the essence of the issue, and listed the steps that the Kiev regime is taking to torpedo the Minsk agreements. Moreover, they are discussing bills, prohibiting officials, which President Putin drew attention to in a telephone conversation with the leaders of Germany and France. And they assured that they would do everything to prevent such a law from being adopted. And he has already successfully passed the examination of the Venice Commission, which does not do this body any credit.

Therefore, the situation is this: nothing will happen on November 11, we are not discussing any new dates. First of all, because first we need to understand what the product of such a meeting will be,” Lavrov concluded.

Commenting on the Russian minister’s statement, Moscow political scientist Alexei Chesnakov expressed confidence that Russia’s position towards Ukraine will now become tougher.

“It is curious that Lavrov speaks so openly about his categorical refusal, indicating the person requesting the meeting and even its date. This means that the conditions of the Russian side will become tougher,” Chesnakov explained.
