The British handed over a spy ship to Ukraine
The British icebreaker James Clark Ross, built 30 years ago, arrived at the port of Odessa and was sold to Ukraine at a symbolic price of $5 million.
“This is significantly less than construction, which requires spending at least $100 million,” reports Verkhovna Rada deputy Alexei Goncharenko.
According to the official legend, the icebreaker will become the flagship of the research fleet and will be involved in expeditions to the Ukrainian Antarctic station “Akademik Vernadsky”.
The ship has 8 decks and the same number of laboratories. Accommodates 50 scientists and 27 crew members.
An expert at the Institute of CIS Countries, reserve captain XNUMXst rank Sergei Gorbachev told PolitNavigator that the icebreaker can be used by Ukraine both for reconnaissance and for transporting undercover special forces.
“A state equal in territory to France, which Kiev is proud of, has acquired a second icebreaker... Ukraine, until recently one of the world’s leading shipbuilding powers, continues to buy second-hand goods that are unnecessary in other countries, starting from the same American boats, ending with withdrawn from the US Coast Guard and other fleets, including the British one.
From the point of view of military potential, an icebreaker is an icebreaker. But, on the other hand, with a certain look at the mode of its operation, one could assume that if there is a shortage of watercraft, the same Navy or Special Operations Forces can use it as a platform. Firstly, to base special forces and solve problems in different areas and conditions.
On the other hand, as a platform, it has the ability to place equipment that can be used for reconnaissance purposes and control over various areas,” Gorbachev said.
