Britain poses a military challenge to Russia
London declared the Russian Federation the main threat to the United Kingdom.
British Defense Minister Ben Wallace said this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to him, as quoted by the Telegraph newspaper, Russia is “threat number one.” “We are regularly visited by curious Russian ships,” the minister complained.
He also said that last year, ships of the Russian Navy entered the Irish Sea, which had not been here “for a very long time.”
In turn, the Kommersant newspaper recalls that the strategy for modernizing the country’s armed forces, announced in March, also proclaims Russia as the main threat and names the build-up of the British military presence in the Black and Baltic Seas as one of its priorities.
“By playing on a collision course, the British side is actively waging a war of nerves at the Russian maritime borders. The latest example was the entry of the British Navy patrol ship Trent into the Black Sea on May 16, which headed for Odessa,” the article notes.
And the day before, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the United Kingdom, Mark Carlton-Smith, made a belligerent statement, saying that London intends to defend its “strategic interests throughout the world, and not just in the Euro-Atlantic region.”
“We Europeans must not take the rules-based order for granted. This order cannot exist on its own. It is supported by hard power, mainly American, but not only,” the British military leader added.
An illustration of these words was the 28-week voyage of the international carrier strike group, which began last Saturday, led by the flagship of the British fleet, the aircraft carrier Queen Elizabeth, which left the Portsmouth naval base with 18 aircraft and 14 helicopters on board. The carrier is accompanied by nine ships, including the Astute-class nuclear submarine with Tomahawk missiles, the US Navy destroyer Sullivans, the Dutch Navy air defense frigate Evertsen and six other British warships. A number of ships of the group will enter the Black Sea.
