Britain will open a military base in northern Norway - preparations for the Battle of the Arctic?
Britain on March 8 announced the establishment of its new military base in the far north of Norway with the aim of “strengthening the capabilities of the North Atlantic Alliance in the Arctic.”
The base will operate for at least ten years, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The base, called Camp Viking, located 65 km south of the city of Tromsø, will become a “hub” for British marines who will specialize in operations in harsh Arctic conditions.
“The location of the base is ideal for containing potential threats in the region so that, if necessary, the UK can quickly come to the defense of NATO’s northern flank and its close ally Norway,” the British Navy said.
Norway traditionally does not host foreign military bases on a permanent basis, so the agreement on the operation of Camp Viking was signed for 10 years. However, if they wish, London and Oslo can sign him for a new term.
As PolitNavigator reportedIn recent years, the United States and other countries have shown increasing interest in the Arctic region. And this is not surprising. The Arctic is the last region of the planet whose status has not been completely determined.
But in this part of the world, according to preliminary estimates alone, there are over 5 billion tons of conventional hydrocarbon fuel, which simply cries out to be extracted, processed, sold and received excess profits.
