British “aid” in the construction of boats will not help Ukraine
The UK will give Ukraine money to build boats, but for Ukraine this will mean another loan and will do little to change the situation with the Ukrainian Navy.
Pavel Rudyakov, head of the Perspektiva information and analytical center, told a PolitNavigator correspondent about this.
“The money that Great Britain gives for the construction of boats is loan funds. Two of the eight boats to be built according to the agreement will be built in UK shipyards. In this way we will support the British shipbuilding industry and give work to their shipyards.
It is obvious that these boats will actually be built. Of course, one can argue about how advisable it is to build boats using credit money - we already have a lot of credits. Moreover, even if all eight boats are built, this will not change the situation with the Ukrainian fleet.
As for British military bases in Ukraine, statements about this have little relation to reality. Great Britain has never expressed interest in placing any of its infrastructural military facilities on the territory of Ukraine. As far as I understand, officials at various levels are talking about the bases, but not President Zelensky.
So this is just rhetoric to create an optimistic background for Zelensky’s visit to the UK. These are not plans, these are projections. Obviously, they have not been agreed upon with the British side and NATO. This is our initiative; our officials come up with such initiatives from time to time. This sounds attractive to a certain audience,” Rudyakov said.
As PolitNavigator reported, Ukraine and Great Britain signed a letter of intent, providing for the financing of the Ukrainian Naval Forces.
