The British non-governmental research center European Leadership Network (ELN), consisting of dozens of retired European military officers and politicians, published a report entitled “Preparing for the worst: Do Russian and NATO military exercises indicate a possible war in Europe?” It follows from the document that military exercises between Russia and NATO indicate that the parties are preparing for a full-fledged confrontation with each other.
ELN analysts draw their conclusion based on an analysis of the scale of military exercises conducted in recent months. They note that both Russia and NATO have increased their forces involved in military exercises. Analysts cite this year’s maneuvers as examples: Russian, with the participation of 80 thousand troops in March, and NATO, held in June in Eastern Europe, in which 15 thousand military personnel from the alliance countries took part.
The report emphasizes that both exercises, according to the leadership of the parties, were directed against hypothetical opponents, but “the nature and scale of the operations indicate otherwise,” ELN analysts emphasize. “Russia is preparing for conflict with NATO, and NATO is preparing for possible confrontation with Russia,” the report notes.
