Kyiv, March 24 (PolitNavigator, Vasily Ablyazimov) – A video has appeared on the network in which the Ukrainian military conducts field tests of the British Saxon armored car, purchased by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine for more than 50 thousand dollars apiece. Saxon unsuccessfully tries to overcome a small hill, which the Soviet BRDM armored car passes the first time.

The purchase of decommissioned British Saxon armored cars was touted by the Kyiv government as an extremely profitable deal. Ukraine paid more than 50 thousand dollars per piece.

Even during the negotiations, military experts expressed doubts that the Saxon would be useful to the Ukrainian army; some doubted its performance and combat effectiveness. In their homeland, these machines have long been written off; the development of the machine itself took place back in the 60s. Nevertheless, both the Ministry of Defense and Poroshenko personally insisted on the effectiveness of the treaty.

The agreement was not terminated even when the former head of the British Army, General Richard Dannatt, said in an interview with The Telegraph that the Saxon armored cars that London transferred to Kyiv for the Ukrainian army were absolutely useless.

“The purchase of this type of military equipment by the Ukrainian government is nothing short of immoral,” Dannatt said. He noted that the transfer of Saxon to the Ukrainian military cannot be called “good news.” The influential Kiev newspaper “Zerkalo Nedeli” also wrote about this, calling police armored cars junk from the 60s. She celebratedthat Ukraine is going to purchase 75 such armored vehicles with a total cost of 2 million 75 thousand pounds sterling, or 1 million 225 thousand UAH per unit.

Already at the time of transportation and testing of the machines, numerous breakdowns occurred only at the training grounds near Kiev. As PolitNavigator reported, On the highway from Kyiv, an accident occurred in the Saxon convoy: two cars slid into a ditch, one crashed into a bump stop. One driver was killed in this accident and another was injured.

But the decommissioned British vehicles were tested by the Ukrainian military directly in the area close to the ATO.

The British armored car was unable to overcome a small hill in two attempts, which the Soviet BRDM easily overcame. The high profile of the fuselage, the fastidiousness of fuels and lubricants, and, as it turned out, insignificant maneuverability make this armored car useless for real combat conditions in the ATO territory.
